Anyone familiar with world historical literature has heard about this name with no doubt: Ataturk. But how many really know the meaning behind this simple looking surname? Who is Mustafa Kemal Ataturk?
Mustafa Kemal Ataturk is the founding father of Republic of Turkey. No, this is not an exaggeration. Ataturk literally found the republic and strived for its improvement. When Ottoman Empire was dissolving after many attempts to modernize its institutions, it was Ataturk and his supporters that fought against numerous enemies to at least keep the central part of Ottoman Empire.
After a brave war a poor army fought against heavily armed enemy forces and won, a new republic was formed under Ataturk. The country was poor, the people was tired of various threats from both within and outside enemies. But this did not stop patriots doing their best to protect their homeland.
Even after the foundation of the republic, Ataturk and his supporters continued to do their best with improving old and corrupted state institutions. This massive effort in various different aspects was the reason why Ataturk is called the founding father of Turkey.
Today, a photo of Ataturk can be found in every classroom throughout the country. After Ataturk passed away in 1938, a mausoleum was made in his name in the capital city of Turkey: Ankara. Every year on 10 November, the sad day Ataturk passed away, citizens from all over the country fill the mausoleum in hopes of paying tribute to their father.
Having an irreplaceable position in the hearts of the country’s citizens and many others throughout the world, Ataturk is sure to stay as a smart leader. But more importantly, Ataturk will always be remembered as a father figure who protected his nation at all costs.
