According to 2019 data, the province has 1.628.894 population and it is the 13th most crowded province in Turkey. Suriye is located on the east and south of Hatay, and there is the Mediterranean on its west. Antakya is the capital district of Hatay and it is the most crowded district in the province. There are 15 districts that are linked to this province.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"western\">History<\/h2>\n<p class=\"western\">Hatay is an important old settlement in Turkey. According to archeological researches, it has been found that the sign of life in these lands dates back to B.C. 100.000 or 40.000. As you can assume from this background, this territory has gone through many traditions, cultures, and religions.<br \/>\nHatay is also seen as one of the earliest settlements in the world. The province is home to three great religion and this situation makes Hatay the peace and brotherhood city. Hatay is elected as \u2018peace city\u2019 from UNESCO.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\">Establishment of Antakya<\/h3>\n<p class=\"western\">The establishment of this city had started in nearly B.C. 300. It was made by Seleukos who got the throne B.C. 312 after the death of Alexander the Great in B.C. 323.<br \/>\nThere was a city near the river of Asi which was called Antigonia. Seleukos had found this city inadequate for their use and asked help from Zeus. He thought that Zeus was sending a message with the eagle which is flying towards the location near the Asi River. Seleukos asked for the demolition of this city and built a new city in there.<br \/>\nAfter the city was established fully he gave this city the name \u2018Antiokheia\u2019 which turns out to be \u2018Antakya\u2019 through time. The city had made such profit that it became a capital district in this kingdom. After the city had gone under the rule of the Roman Empire, it maintains its profit and became the third big city in the Empire.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\">The State of Hatay and joining to the Republic of Turkey<\/h3>\n<p class=\"western\">On third July 1938, negotiations had been held between France and Turkey. In September 1938, The Hatay council gathered and announced the independence of the state of Hatay.<br \/>\nThe referendum had been made in Hatay to taking over the area by the Turks. On 29 June 1939, Hatay became a Turkish province.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"western\">Climate and geography<\/h2>\n<p class=\"western\">46% of the land is covered with mountains. The most well-known mountains are north-south leading Nur Mountains in the province. The mountain areas are drier than the coasts. The climate of Hatay is the common Mediterranean; winters are warm and wet, summers are hot and dry.<br \/>\nMaki and forests are the endemics of this province. Hatay is very rich in its plantation because of its climate. You can find well-looking green trees like; oak, poplar, and sycamore. Besides, you can find colorful flowers like; daphne, thyme, and lavender in this climate.<br \/>\n54,7% of Hatay is an agricultural area. The income is based on agriculture and farming. Also, because it is a developed province in Turkey, the industry playing a role in income. Hatay has a lot of agricultural products which are barley, wheat, grains, potato, cotton, onion, tomato, pepper, orange, apple, lemon, grape, watermelon, banana, and olive, etc.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"western\">Culture and cuisine<\/h2>\n<p class=\"western\">The geographical location of Hatay makes this province a gateway between south and north and a gate for the incomers from east. Antakya had been playing the role of an important trade center between continents. This situation has been allowing many cultures to undergo on these lands. Iskenderun was also played an important role in Mesopotamia as a trade port.<\/p>\n<p>Three great religions are living together in the spirits of these lands because of its being home to many cultures and many civilizations through time. Mosques, churches, and havras are standing still together in Hatay. The differences are seen as the richness of the provinces&#8217; cultural background.<br \/>\nThey have a variety of folklore dances, they call it \u2018halay\u2019 generally. The music of halay is produced with instruments like zurna, davul, zil or argun. Adana and Gaziantep have a similar dance style with Hatay. The dances generally portray love, happiness or lamentation.<br \/>\nHatay is a sweet and warm Mediterranean province and it has some tropical agricultural products like sweet potato and sugar cane. Local cuisine used these tastes in the dishes. Hatay is famous for its sugary K\u00fcnefe with syrup. Hummus and kebab are famous in the province too. Kebab\u2019s species are variable around Turkey. In Hatay, they generally make Tepsi Kebab or Kag\u0131t Kebab. They also have a special food made from bread, tomato paste, spice, garlic and walnut called \u2018muhammara\u2019. You should try these delicious foods if you visit Hatay.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"western\">Places to visit in Hatay<\/h2>\n<p class=\"western\">Hatay is a big province with many places to visit. You can visit Hatay whenever you want in the year because the weather conditions are not harsh. Summers are convenient for hot summer holidays. Hatay has one of the longest beaches in the Mediterranean region which is \u00c7evlik Beach. Arsuz Beach is another nice option if you want to swim on a nice summer day. There are many other historical and natural areas in Hatay. Arsuz and Samandag are important districts for their summer tourism in Hatay.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\">Hatay Archeological Museum<\/h3>\n<p class=\"western\">This museum has the second biggest mosaic collection in the world and it is the most famous historical attraction in Hatay. Museum has thirty-five thousand pieces from the Hittite, Roman, Hellenistic and Byzantium era.<br \/>\nRoman and Byzantium mosaics are the main reason for the visitors to come and visit the museum. There are also tombs, jewelry, statues, etc. from different eras.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\">Church of Saint Peter<\/h3>\n<p class=\"western\">The church&#8217;s importance is that it is believed the church was used by the first Christians and it is one of the oldest churches in Christianity. It is located near Antakya and 35 km far from Hatay.<br \/>\nThey assume that Saint Petrus, one of the apostles of Jesus, had made the first gatherings with the community in this church to spread the religion. The church has the role of a center in Christianity from that perspective.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\">Habib-i Neccar Mosque<\/h3>\n<p class=\"western\">It is known as the first mosque that had been built in Anatolia. They assume that the mosque was built in 636 while the times of Hz. \u00d6mer. The mosque is a very important symbol for Hatay\u2019s attitude towards peace. The grave of Habib-i Neccar is inside of this mosque. Habib-i Neccar is a person who protected the envoys of Jesus even he was a Muslim.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\">Titus Tunnel of Vespasian<\/h3>\n<p class=\"western\">It is located 5 km far from the Samanda\u011f district. This tunnel was built by the Roman Emperor Vespasian. It aimed to protect the city from floods. The tunnel is an important piece of example for Roman water engineering.<br \/>\nThere are rock tombs on the east of this tunnel that you can visit. The tombs are important historically and it is worth seeing them because of their visuality.<br \/>\nBe\u015fikli Cave is also located near the Titus tunnel. It is one of the most important pieces of an ancient city called \u2018Seleuika Prera\u2019. There are 12 tombs in this cave.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\">Payas Castle<\/h3>\n<p class=\"western\">It is located in the Payas district which is 70 km far from Hatay. Payas is also located between D\u00f6rtyol and \u0130skenderun districts. The location is important for its historical background which involves both Byzantium and the Ottoman era. The castle was first built by the crusaders. Ottomans demolished this castle to built a new one. Ottomans used this castle as a shipyard and an accommodation place for the visitors because of its location near the port.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\">Harbiye (Daphne) Waterfall<\/h3>\n<p class=\"western\">The waterfall is located 6 km far from Antakya. It pours into the Asi River. It is an important place for the Hellenistic and Roman era.<br \/>\nThere was an ancient city that has a famous mythological background. They believe that Apollo falls in love with Daphne and Mother Earth turns her into an elegant daphne tree to save her. The waterfall represents the tears of Daphne according to this story.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Hatay T\u00fcrkiye\u2019nin en g\u00fcneyinde, Akdeniz b\u00f6lgesinde bulunmaktad\u0131r. 2019 verilerine g\u00f6re ilin n\u00fcfusu 1.628.894\u2019d\u00fcr ve T\u00fcrkiye\u2019nin en kalabal\u0131k 13. ilidir. Arkeolojik \u00e7al\u0131\u015fmalarda yap\u0131lan bulgulara g\u00f6re bu b\u00f6lgenin tarihi M.\u00d6. 100.000 ya da 40.000\u2019lere dayanmaktad\u0131r. Bu arka plandan g\u00f6r\u00fclebilece\u011fi \u00fczere, bu topraklar zaman i\u00e7erisinde \u00e7e\u015fitli k\u00fclt\u00fcrler, gelenekler ve dinler g\u00f6rm\u00fc\u015ft\u00fcr. Ayn\u0131 zamanda Hatay, d\u00fcnyadaki en eski yerle\u015fim yerlerinden de biri olarak g\u00f6r\u00fclmektedir. \u0130limiz \u00fc\u00e7 b\u00fcy\u00fck dine ev sahipli\u011fi yapmaktad\u0131r ve bu durum Hatay\u2019\u0131 bar\u0131\u015f ve karde\u015flik \u015fehri haline getirmi\u015ftir. UNESCO, Hatay\u2019\u0131 \u2018bar\u0131\u015f \u015fehri\u2019 olarak ilan etmi\u015ftir.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\">Antakya\u2019n\u0131n Kurulu\u015fu<\/h3>\n<p class=\"western\">Bu kentin kurulu\u015fu yakla\u015f\u0131k M.\u00d6. 300\u2019lerdedir. M.\u00d6 323\u2019te B\u00fcy\u00fck \u0130skender\u2019in \u00f6l\u00fcm\u00fcn\u00fcn ard\u0131ndan M.\u00d6. 312\u2019de tahta ge\u00e7en Seleukos taraf\u0131ndan kurulmu\u015ftur.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Asi Nehri\u2019nin yan\u0131nda Antigonia ad\u0131nda bir \u015fehir vard\u0131. Seleukos ba\u015fa ge\u00e7ti\u011finde bu \u015fehrin kullan\u0131m\u0131 a\u00e7\u0131s\u0131ndan yetersiz oldu\u011funu g\u00f6rd\u00fc ve Zeus\u2019tan yard\u0131m istedi. Seleukos, Asi Nehri\u2019nin yan\u0131na u\u00e7an kartal ile Zeus\u2019un bir mesaj g\u00f6nderdi\u011fini d\u00fc\u015f\u00fcnd\u00fc. Bu olay\u0131n ard\u0131ndan Seleukos bu kenti y\u0131kt\u0131r\u0131p yeniden yap\u0131m\u0131na ba\u015flad\u0131.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Kent tamamen kurulduktan sonra Seleukos buraya \u2018Antiokheia\u2019 ad\u0131n\u0131 verdi ve bu isim zamanla \u2018Antakya\u2019 ismine d\u00f6n\u00fc\u015fm\u00fc\u015ft\u00fcr. Kent \u00f6ne \u00e7\u0131kan karakteriyle zaman i\u00e7inde merkez il\u00e7e haline gelmi\u015ftir ve Roma \u0130mparatorlu\u011fu zaman\u0131nda da bu stat\u00fcs\u00fcn\u00fc koruyum Roma\u2019n\u0131n en b\u00fcy\u00fck 3. kenti haline gelmi\u015ftir.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\">Hatay Cumhuriyeti ve T\u00fcrkiye Cumhuriyeti\u2019ne kat\u0131lmas\u0131<\/h3>\n<p class=\"western\">3 Temmuz 1938 y\u0131l\u0131nda Fransa ve T\u00fcrkiye aras\u0131nda toplant\u0131lar d\u00fczenlendi. Eyl\u00fcl 1938 y\u0131l\u0131nda Hatay meclisi topland\u0131 ve Hatay\u2019\u0131n ba\u011f\u0131ms\u0131zl\u0131\u011f\u0131n\u0131 ilan etti.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">T\u00fcrklerin Hatay\u2019\u0131 alma konusunda bir referandum d\u00fczenlendi ve 29 Haziran 1939 senesinde Hatay T\u00fcrkiye\u2019ye kat\u0131l\u0131p bir il\u00e7esi haline geldi.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"western\">\u0130klimi ve co\u011frafyas\u0131<\/h2>\n<p class=\"western\">Hatay ilinin %46\u2019s\u0131 da\u011flarla kapl\u0131d\u0131r. En bilindik da\u011flar\u0131ndan birisi kuzeyden g\u00fcneye uzanan Nur Da\u011flar\u0131\u2019d\u0131r. Da\u011fl\u0131k alanlar sahil kesimlerine g\u00f6re daha kurakt\u0131r. Hatay Akdeniz iklimine sahiptir; k\u0131\u015flar\u0131 \u0131l\u0131k ve ya\u011f\u0131\u015fl\u0131, yazlar\u0131 ise kurak ve s\u0131cak ge\u00e7er. \u0130lin bitki \u00f6rt\u00fcs\u00fcn\u00fc ise maki ve ormanlar olu\u015fturur. Hatay iklimi dolay\u0131s\u0131yla bitki \u00e7e\u015fitlili\u011fi bak\u0131m\u0131ndan \u00e7ok zengindir. \u00c7\u0131nar, kavak ve me\u015fe gibi ye\u015fil ve g\u00fczel g\u00f6r\u00fcn\u00fcml\u00fc a\u011fa\u00e7lar vard\u0131r. Buna ek olarak defne, kekik ve lavanta gibi \u00e7e\u015fitli ve renkli \u00e7i\u00e7eklere de sahiptir.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Hatay\u2019\u0131n %54,7\u2019si tar\u0131m alan\u0131d\u0131r. \u0130lin geliri hem tar\u0131ma hem de hayvanc\u0131l\u0131\u011fa dayan\u0131r. Ayr\u0131ca Hatay T\u00fcrkiye\u2019nin geli\u015fmi\u015f illerinden biri oldu\u011fu i\u00e7in end\u00fcstri alan\u0131 da gelir kaynaklar\u0131ndan biridir. Bu\u011fday, arpa, patates, so\u011fan, domates, pamuk, zeytin, biber, portakal, elma, limon, \u00fcz\u00fcm, karpuz ve muz gibi bir\u00e7ok tar\u0131m \u00fcr\u00fcn\u00fc \u00fcretilebilen bir ildir.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"western\">K\u00fclt\u00fcr\u00fc ve mutfa\u011f\u0131<\/h2>\n<p class=\"western\">Hatay\u2019\u0131n co\u011frafi konumu ona kuzey ve g\u00fcney aras\u0131nda bir ge\u00e7i\u015f kap\u0131s\u0131 ve do\u011fudan gelenlere bir kap\u0131 olma \u00f6zelli\u011fi verir. Antakya b\u00f6lgeler aras\u0131 ticarette \u00f6nemli bir konumdad\u0131r. Bu durum, bu topraklardan bir\u00e7ok k\u00fclt\u00fcr\u00fcn ge\u00e7mesine sebep olmu\u015ftur. \u0130skenderun\u2019da Mezopotamya\u2019da ticaret a\u00e7\u0131s\u0131ndan \u00f6nemli rol oynayan kentlerden biridir.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">\u00dc\u00e7 b\u00fcy\u00fck din bu topraklar\u0131n ruhunda harmanlanm\u0131\u015f bir \u015fekilde ya\u015famaktad\u0131r. Camiler, kiliseler ve havralar hala birlikte durmaktad\u0131r. Bu farkl\u0131l\u0131klar ilin sahip oldu\u011fu k\u00fclt\u00fcrel zenginli\u011fin sonucu olarak g\u00f6r\u00fcl\u00fcr.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">\u00c7e\u015fitli folklor danslar\u0131 vard\u0131r ve bunlar\u0131n genel ad\u0131na \u2018halay\u2019 denmektedir. Halay i\u00e7in yap\u0131lan m\u00fczik davul, zurna, zil veya argun gibi aletlerle \u00fcretilmektedir. Adana ve Gaziantep y\u00f6resinin halaylar\u0131 da Hatay ile benzerlik g\u00f6sterir. Danslar genellikle a\u015fk, mutluluk ya da yak\u0131lan a\u011f\u0131tlar\u0131 sergiler.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Hatay s\u0131cak ve tatl\u0131 bir Akdeniz ilidir ve tatl\u0131 patates, \u015feker kam\u0131\u015f\u0131 gibi tropikal \u00fcr\u00fcnler de topraklar\u0131nda yeti\u015febilmektedir. Bu lezzetleri de y\u00f6resel yemeklerinde kullanmaktad\u0131rlar. Hatay \u015fekerli ve \u015ferbetli k\u00fcnefesi de me\u015fhurdur. Humus ve kebap di\u011fer me\u015fhur yiyeceklerindendir. Kebap T\u00fcrkiye i\u00e7inde \u00e7e\u015fitli tarifleri olan bir \u00fcr\u00fcnd\u00fcr. Hatay\u2019da en \u00e7ok yap\u0131lan kebap \u00e7e\u015fitleri tepsi kebab\u0131 ve ka\u011f\u0131t kebab\u0131d\u0131r. Ekmek, sal\u00e7a, baharat, sar\u0131msak ve cevizden yak\u0131lan muhammara ad\u0131nda \u00fcnl\u00fc bir yiyecekleri de vard\u0131r. Hatay\u2019\u0131 ziyaret ederseniz bu leziz yemeklerini tatmal\u0131s\u0131n\u0131z.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"western\">Hatay\u2019da gezilecek yerler<\/h2>\n<p class=\"western\">Hatay hem b\u00fcy\u00fck hem de gezilecek bir\u00e7ok yere sahip bir ildir. Hatay\u2019\u0131 y\u0131l\u0131n herhangi bir zaman\u0131nda ziyaret edebilirsiniz \u00e7\u00fcnk\u00fc iklim ko\u015fullar\u0131 sert de\u011fildir. Yazlar\u0131 s\u0131cak yaz tatilleri i\u00e7in uygun bir zamand\u0131r. Hatay, Akdeniz b\u00f6lgesindeki en uzun plajlardan birisi olan \u00c7evlik Plaj\u0131\u2019na sahiptir. Arsuz Plaj\u0131 da s\u0131cak bir yaz g\u00fcn\u00fcnde y\u00fczmek i\u00e7in gidilebilecek g\u00fczel opsiyonlardan birisidir. Hatay\u2019da daha bir\u00e7ok tarihi ve do\u011fal g\u00fczellikler vard\u0131r. Arsuz ve Samanda\u011f yaz turizmi a\u00e7\u0131s\u0131ndan \u00f6nemli b\u00f6lgeleridir.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\">Hatay Arkeoloji M\u00fczesi<\/h3>\n<p class=\"western\">Bu m\u00fcze d\u00fcnyadaki en b\u00fcy\u00fck \u00fc\u00e7\u00fcnc\u00fc mozaik koleksiyonuna sahiptir ve Hatay\u2019daki en \u00e7ok ziyaret\u00e7i \u00e7eken tarihi alanlardan biridir. M\u00fczede Hitit, Roma, Helenistik ve Bizans d\u00f6nemlerine ait 37 bin eser bulunmaktad\u0131r.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Roma ve Bizans mozaikleri ziyaret\u00e7ilerin gelmesindeki en ba\u015fl\u0131ca nedenlerden biridir. Ayr\u0131ca farkl\u0131 d\u00f6nemlere ait mezarlar, tak\u0131lar ve heykeller de bulunmaktad\u0131r.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\">Saint Peter Kilisesi<\/h3>\n<p class=\"western\">Kilisenin \u00f6nemi, buran\u0131n Hristiyanl\u0131\u011f\u0131n ilk kiliselerinden birisi oldu\u011funa inan\u0131lmas\u0131d\u0131r ve bu kilisenin Hristiyanl\u0131\u011f\u0131 yaymak i\u00e7in kullan\u0131lm\u0131\u015f oldu\u011fu s\u00f6ylenmektedir. Antakya\u2019n\u0131n yak\u0131nlar\u0131nda ve Hatay\u2019a da 35 km uzakl\u0131kta bulunmaktad\u0131r.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Hz. \u0130sa\u2019n\u0131n havarilerinden birisi olan Aziz Petrus\u2019un Hristiyanl\u0131\u011f\u0131 yaymak amac\u0131yla burada cemaatle toplant\u0131lar yapt\u0131\u011f\u0131 s\u00f6ylenmektedir. Bu a\u00e7\u0131dan bu kilise Hristiyanl\u0131k i\u00e7in bir merkez g\u00f6revi g\u00f6rm\u00fc\u015ft\u00fcr.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\">Habib-i Neccar Camisi<\/h3>\n<p class=\"western\">Bu caminin Anadolu\u2019da in\u015fa edilmi\u015f il cami oldu\u011fu bilinmektedir. Caminin 636 y\u0131l\u0131nda Hz. \u00d6mer zaman\u0131nda in\u015fa edildi\u011fi d\u00fc\u015f\u00fcn\u00fclmektedir. Cami Hatay\u2019\u0131n karde\u015flik ve bar\u0131\u015f d\u00fc\u015f\u00fcncesine uygun olarak \u00f6nemli bir sembol haline gelmi\u015ftir. Habib-i Neccar\u2019\u0131n mezar\u0131 da burada bulunmaktad\u0131r. Habib-i Neccar, m\u00fcsl\u00fcman oldu\u011fu halde Hz. \u0130san\u0131n savunucular\u0131n\u0131 korumu\u015ftur.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\">Titus T\u00fcneli<\/h3>\n<p class=\"western\">Samanda\u011f il\u00e7esine 5 km uzakl\u0131kta bulunmaktad\u0131r. Bu mezarlar tarihi a\u00e7\u0131dan \u00f6nemlidir ve g\u00f6r\u00fcnt\u00fcleri bak\u0131m\u0131ndan g\u00f6r\u00fclmeye de\u011ferdir.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Be\u015fikli ma\u011faras\u0131 da Titus t\u00fcnelinin yak\u0131nlar\u0131nda bulunmaktad\u0131r. Seleuika Prera ad\u0131nda antik bir kentin \u00f6nemli kal\u0131nt\u0131lar\u0131nda biridir. Bu ma\u011faran\u0131n i\u00e7inde 12 adet mezar bulunmaktad\u0131r.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\">Payas Kalesi<\/h3>\n<p class=\"western\">Hatay\u2019 a 70 km uzakl\u0131kta olan Payas il\u00e7esinde bulunur.
