I\u011fd\u0131r is a province in eastern Turkey. It has border lines with Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Iran. I\u011fd\u0131r is covering an estimated 3,588 <\/span><\/span>km\u00b2 area, and its population is 199,442(2019). I\u011fd\u0131r was a part of Kars province before 1992, on 27 May 1992 it segregated from Kars and became a province. I\u011fd\u0131r is the only province that has border lines with three different countries in Turkey.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The highest mountain in Turkey, Mount Ararat(A\u011fr\u0131 Da\u011f\u0131), is located in I\u011fd\u0131r province partly and can be seen from the province easily. The province has 4 districts which are Aral\u0131k, I\u011fd\u0131r, Karakoyunlu, and Tuzluca.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

History<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

I\u011fd\u0131r\u2019s history dates back to 4000 BC according to archeological researches. They found that the first settlement in I\u011fd\u0131r belonged to Hurrians. The land went under the rule of the Urartu kingdom 800 BC.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

After the Persian Empire had the lands, Alexander the Great beat the Persians and took over the area. The armies of Romans and Byzantine were present there from the 4th century BC. Arab armies took over the area in 646. For 400 years, Turks and Mongols fought for these lands and in the early 15th century, Kara Koyunlu and Ak Koyunlu Turkic tribes settled in the area.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In the times of Suleiman the Magnificent, I\u011fd\u0131r was added to the Ottoman territory while they were on the Iran expedition. Until the 19th century, the area had been changing hands. In 1878, Russian forces took over I\u011fd\u0131r until 1918. Because of the Ararat area, the lands went through the rule of the First Republic of Armenia towards the end of World War I.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Turkish army attacked the area and they signed the Treaty of Kars with the Soviet government. The area was in the Turkish borders after then, but the Armenian population has remained in these lands. The struggle was there between the two nations. Turkish- Armenian War had started and the province became totally in the borders of Turkey on 13 November 1920.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Geography and climate<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

I\u011fd\u0131r is a place that has high plateaus and mountainous areas. I\u011fd\u0131r Plain has alluvial soil and it is convenient for agriculture. They produced cotton and many kinds of fruits in that plain. Mount Ararat\u2019s big parts are in the borders of this province. There are many legends about this mountain. One of them is about Noah\u2019s ship which is written on the Bible, Torah, and Quran. Also, this story is mentioned in the epic of G\u0131lgamesh. This legend is one of the reasons for attractions in that area.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I\u011fd\u0131r is also completely in the basin of Aras River. Because of this situation, there are some streams which are joining to this river( Gaziler \u00c7ay\u0131, Buruksu \u00c7ay\u0131, Orta Karasu \u00c7ay\u0131).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I\u011fd\u0131r has Eastern Anatolia continental climate, but the plain areas in the province are not affected by the harsh conditions of this climate. I\u011fd\u0131r Plain is one of the least rainy areas in Turkey. Summers are long, hot and dry. The harsh conditions are not available in the province because it located below the areas like Mount Ararat. The average temperature is 11,6 \u00b0C throughout the year.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I\u011fd\u0131r is a poor province for its forests because the province has azonal soil mainly. This is the cause of the area has salt plants.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The old settlements have changed the natural vegetation of this area through time and the plains are becoming mainly agricultural areas. Examples of agricultural products in I\u011fd\u0131r are sugar beet, cotton, tomato, watermelon, etc. Farming is also playing a big role in the income of the province. The number one breeding field is on sheep and the cattle breeding is ranked as second.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Culture and cuisine<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

Because the province has a variety of ethnic backgrounds, they have many traditions. One of them is about matrimony, they care for the matrimonial ceremonies. These ceremonies last long and they are generally crowded with every family member. These family members give presents to a newly wedded couple as a tradition.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

They have a tradition called \u2018ko\u00e7 Kat\u0131m\u0131\u2019. Ko\u00e7 means ram. The tradition has been held by the owners of sheep herd. The date of this celebration like the situation is in the last week of October. They color their sheep and adorn them with fruits like apple. It is like a festival.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

They also celebrate the Nowruz on 21 of March annually. They have special activities like planting wheat three weeks before the Nowruz and use this wheat for making Ashura in the Nowruz day. They give importance to Ashura for its legend which comes from Noah\u2019s story. Nowruz is celebrated as a holiday, in this day they try to make peace between foes and they wear their clean and nice-looking clothes.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Because I\u011fd\u0131r is intertwined with the culture of Azerbaijan, they have folklore dance named \u2018Kafkas Dance\u2019. This dance generally performed at weddings, circumcisions or on happy days.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

They have local dishes like yogurt soup or \u2018ayran a\u015f\u0131\u2019which are made from yogurt. They can make this soup both hor and cold. They also have a special meatball food called \u2018 ta\u015f k\u00f6fte\u2019. The territory is rich with its meat foods because of the improves animal breeding in the area.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Where to visit in I\u011fd\u0131r<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

You can travel to I\u011fd\u0131r with airlines directly from \u0130stanbul and Ankara. I\u011fd\u0131r Airport has been on duty since 13 July 2012. I\u011fd\u0131r is a special place that you can experience the view of Mount Ararat, and also it has many historical sites that you can visit.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Salt Cave<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

This cave is located in the Tuzluca district. The area covers 55 acres. It is assumed that the cave has the capacity to cover up the salt requirement of Turkey for 100 years. 60 tons of salt is extracted daily in here. The place is also famous for its salt therapy for the ones who have respiratory diseases.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Stork Statue<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

The statue is located at the entrance of the province. Its importance is that I\u011fd\u0131r is known as the city of storks because storks are living in this province for four seasons in a year.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Surmari Castle<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

It is located in the village of S\u00fcrmeli which is 25 km far from the city of I\u011fd\u0131r. It is in one of the medieval Armenian towns. There is no certain knowledge about who built this castle or when, but the castle\u2019s name is seen frequently in the stories of Dedekorkut.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Statues with Ram Heads (Ko\u00e7 Ba\u015f\u0131 Mezar Ta\u015flar\u0131)<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

These cemetery stones can be seen all around the province but they\u2019re in the Karakoyunlu district. They are pieces that are from the Kara Koyunlu period.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The caravanserai of Harmand\u00f6ven<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

It is located in the city of I\u011fd\u0131r. It was built by \u015eerafettin Ejder in the 12th century. The caravanserai is important for its visuality with the decorations and motifs. It belongs to Seljuks and it was used as an accommodation place for the incomers from Batum, Tiflis, Bak\u00fc, \u015eirvan, Divin and An\u0131.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I\u011fd\u0131r Castle<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

It is located on the north slopes of Mount Ararat and its other name is \u2018Korhan Castle\u2019. The castle was built by the Oguz Turks in the 11th century. There is a water cistern in the castle. You can visit and see the beauties of this construction.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Bridge of Aliko\u00e7ek Stream<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

The bridge is fully made of black cut stones, but there is a little part of it remains today. It is 10-12 meters long and its height is 3 meters.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Aras Bird Research and Education Center<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

This center is one of the four active bird researching stations in Turkey. Involving Aras River, Tuzluca and Yukari Ciyrikli, there are 204 bird species recorded in this station. It is located in Yukari Ciyrikli village and you can visit there as a volunteer for the experience of birds and their lives.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

T\u00fcrkiye\u2019deki en y\u00fcksek da\u011f olan A\u011fr\u0131 Da\u011f\u01312n\u0131n bir k\u0131sm\u0131 I\u011fd\u0131r il s\u0131n\u0131rlar\u0131 i\u00e7inde bulunur ve ilden rahat\u00e7a g\u00f6r\u00fclebilir konumdad\u0131r. Aral\u0131k, I\u011fd\u0131r, Karakoyunlu ve Tuzluca olmak \u00fczere d\u00f6rt adet il\u00e7esi bul\u0131nmaktad\u0131r.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Arkeolojik \u00e7al\u0131\u015fmalara g\u00f6re I\u011fd\u0131r\u2019\u0131n tarihi M.\u00d6. 4000\u2019lere dayanmaktad\u0131r. I\u011fd\u0131r\u2019daki ilk yerle\u015fimin Hurrilere ait oldu\u011fu bulunmu\u015ftur. Bu topraklar M.\u00d6. 800 senesinde Urartu Krall\u0131\u011f\u0131n\u0131n alt\u0131na girmi\u015ftir.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Pers \u0130mparatorlu\u011funun topraklar\u0131 ele ge\u00e7irmesinden sonra, B\u00fcy\u00fck \u0130skender Perslileri yenerek buray\u0131 alm\u0131\u015ft\u0131r. Roma ve Bizans ordular\u0131 M.\u00d6. 4. as\u0131ra kadar topraklara hakim olmu\u015ftur. Arap ordular\u0131 646 senesinde topraklar\u0131 ele ge\u00e7irmi\u015ftir. 15. y\u00fczy\u0131lda, 400 y\u0131l boyunca T\u00fcrkler ve Mo\u011follar bu b\u00f6lge i\u00e7in sava\u015fm\u0131\u015flard\u0131r. Akkoyunlu ve Karakoyunlu T\u00fcrk kabileleri bu b\u00f6lgeye yerle\u015fmi\u015flerdir. Sultan S\u00fcleyman d\u00f6neminde, \u0130ran seferleri yap\u0131l\u0131rken, bu topraklar Osmanl\u0131 topraklar\u0131na eklenmi\u015ftir. 19. y\u00fczy\u0131la kadar b\u00f6lge s\u00fcrekli el de\u011fi\u015ftirip durmu\u015ftur. 1878 y\u0131l\u0131nda, 1918 senesine kadar Rus g\u00fc\u00e7leri \u00f6lgeye sahip olmu\u015flard\u0131r. A\u011fr\u0131 Da\u011f\u0131\u2019n\u0131n konumu dolay\u0131s\u0131yla, Birinci D\u00fcnya Sava\u015f\u0131\u2019n\u0131n sonlar\u0131nda bu topraklar \u0130lk Ermeni Cumhuriyeti\u2019nin hakimiyeti alt\u0131na al\u0131nm\u0131\u015ft\u0131r.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

T\u00fcrkler bu b\u00f6lgeyi i\u015fgal edip Sovyet g\u00fc\u00e7leriyle Kars Antla\u015fmas\u0131n\u0131 imzalam\u0131\u015flard\u0131r ve bu olaydan sonra b\u00f6lgeye T\u00fcrkler hak<\/span><\/span>im<\/span><\/span> olmu\u015ftur. Ermeni n\u00fcfusu bu b\u00f6lgede \u00e7o\u011funlukta olmaya devam etmi\u015ftir. Ermeni ve T\u00fcrk halk\u0131 aras\u0131nda \u00e7eki\u015fmeler g\u00f6r\u00fclm\u00fc\u015ft\u00fcr ve T\u00fcrk-Ermeni Sava\u015f\u0131 ya\u015fanm\u0131\u015ft\u0131r. Bu sava\u015f\u0131n ard\u0131ndan 13 Eyl\u00fcl 1920 senesinde topraklar tamamen T\u00fcrk hakimiyeti alt\u0131na girmi\u015ftir.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u0130klimi ve co\u011frafyas\u0131<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

I\u011fd\u0131r geni\u015f platolar\u0131 olan ve da\u011fl\u0131k alanlardan olu\u015fan bir ildir. I\u011fd\u0131r Ovas\u0131 tar\u0131ma elveri\u015fli olan al\u00fcvyal topraklara sahiptir. Bu ovada pamuk ve \u00e7e\u015fitli meyveler \u00fcretilmektedir. A\u011fr\u0131 Da\u011f\u0131\u2019n\u0131n b\u00fcy\u00fck bir k\u0131sm\u0131 bu ilin i\u00e7erisindedir. Bu da\u011f hakk\u0131nda \u00e7ok farkl\u0131 efsaneler bulunmaktad\u0131r. Bunlardan biri Kuran, \u0130ncil ve Tevrat\u2019ta ge\u00e7en Nuh\u2019un gemisidir. Ayr\u0131ca, bu hikaye G\u0131lgam\u0131\u015f destan\u0131nda da bahsedilmi\u015ftir. Efsane bu da\u011f\u0131 g\u00f6rmek i\u00e7in gelenlere bir sebep sunmaktad\u0131r. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I\u011fd\u0131r, tamamen Aras Nehri\u2019nin havzas\u0131n\u0131n i\u00e7inde bulunmaktad\u0131r. Bu durumdan dolay\u0131, bu nehire kat\u0131lan birka\u00e7 tane akarsu bulunmaktad\u0131r(Gaziler \u00c7ay\u0131, Buruksu \u00c7ay\u0131, Orta Karasu \u00c7ay\u0131).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I\u011fd\u0131r Do\u011fu Anadolu karasal iklimine sahiptir. I\u011fd\u0131r Ovas\u0131, T\u00fcrkiye\u2019nin en az ya\u011f\u0131\u015f alan b\u00f6lgelerinden biridir. Ova ve d\u00fcz olan alanlar karasal iklimin sert ko\u015fullar\u0131ndan etkilenmemektedir. Yazlar\u0131 s\u0131cak, kurak ve uzundur. \u0130klimin sert ko\u015fullar\u0131 bu b\u00f6lgeyi etkilemektedir, \u00e7\u00fcnk\u00fc I\u011fd\u0131r A\u011fr\u0131 Da\u011f\u0131 gibi y\u00fcksekliklerin a\u015fa\u011f\u0131s\u0131nda konumlanmaktad\u0131r. Y\u0131ll\u0131k ortalama s\u0131cakl\u0131k 11,6 <\/span><\/span> \u00b0C\u2019<\/span><\/span>dir. I\u011fd\u0131r orman bitki \u00f6rt\u00fcs\u00fc a\u00e7\u0131s\u0131ndan fakir bir b\u00f6lgedir \u00e7\u00fcnk\u00fc genellikle azonal topraklara sahiptir. B\u00f6lgenin tuzcul bitkilere sahip olmas\u0131n\u0131n nedeni de budur.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Eski yerle\u015fim yerlerinin etkilerinden dolay\u0131 bu b\u00f6lgenin do\u011fal vejetasyonu de\u011fi\u015fmi\u015ftir ve daha \u00e7ok tar\u0131msal alana sahip olmu\u015ftur. I\u011fd\u0131r\u2019da \u00fcretilen tar\u0131m \u00fcr\u00fcnlerine \u00f6rnekler \u015fu \u015fekilde verilebilir; \u015feker pancar\u0131, pamuk, domates,karpuz vb. Hayvanc\u0131l\u0131k da ilin \u00f6nemli gelir kaynaklar\u0131ndan biridir. Koyunculuk birinci s\u0131radad\u0131r ve ikinci s\u0131rada da s\u0131\u011f\u0131rc\u0131l\u0131k gelmektedir.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

K\u00fclt\u00fcr ve mutfa\u011f\u0131<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

B\u00f6lge \u00e7ok farkl\u0131 etnik arka planlara sahip oldu\u011fu i\u00e7in bir\u00e7ok gelenekleri vard\u0131r. Bunlardan biri evlilik hak<\/span><\/span>k<\/span><\/span>\u0131ndad\u0131r ve d\u00fc\u011f\u00fcnlere \u00e7ok \u00f6nem verilir. D\u00fc\u011f\u00fcnler uzun s\u00fcrmektedir ve genellikle t\u00fcm aile \u00fcyeleriyle birlikte \u00e7ok kalabal\u0131k olmaktad\u0131r. Aile \u00fcyeleri yeni evlenen \u00e7iftlere gelenek olarak hediye verirler.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Ko\u00e7 Kat\u0131m\u0131 ad\u0131nda bir ba\u015fka gelenekler<\/span><\/span>i<\/span><\/span> daha vard\u0131r. Bu gelenek koyun s\u00fcr\u00fcleri olanlar taraf\u0131ndan yap\u0131lmaktad\u0131r. Bu kutlama Ekim ay\u0131n\u0131n son haftas\u0131nda yap\u0131l\u0131r. Koyunlar\u0131 rengarenk boyarlar ve onlar\u0131 elma gibi meyvelerle s\u00fcslerler. Ayn\u0131 bir festival havas\u0131 ya\u015fan\u0131r.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Her 21 Mart\u2019ta Nevruzu da kutlarlar. Nevruz zaman\u0131ndan 3 hafta \u00f6nce bu\u011fday dikip bu bu\u011fday\u0131 Nevruz g\u00fcn\u00fcnde a\u015fure yap\u0131m\u0131nda kullanmak gibi \u00f6zel gelenekler<\/span><\/span>i<\/span><\/span> vard\u0131r. Nuh\u2019un hikayesinde ge\u00e7en a\u015fure yap\u0131m\u0131na \u00e7ok \u00f6nem verirler. Nevruz bayram\u0131nda k\u00fcsler bar\u0131\u015ft\u0131r\u0131lmaya \u00e7al\u0131\u015f\u0131l\u0131r ve herkes yeni ve g\u00fczel k\u0131yafetlerini giyer.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I\u011fd\u0131r, Azerbeycan k\u00fclt\u00fcr\u00fcyle i\u00e7 i\u00e7e oldu\u011fu i\u00e7in \u2018Kafkas Oyunu\u2019 ad\u0131nda folklor danslar\u0131 vard\u0131r. Bu dans genellikle d\u00fc\u011f\u00fcnlerde, s\u00fcnnetlerde ve mutlu g\u00fcnlerde sergilenir.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Yo\u011furt \u00e7orbas\u0131 veya ayran a\u015f\u0131 olarak adland\u0131rd\u0131klar\u0131 y\u00f6resel yiyecekleri vard\u0131r. Bu \u00e7orbay\u0131 hem so\u011fuk hemde s\u0131cak olarak yaparlar. Ta\u015f k\u00f6f<\/span><\/span>t<\/span><\/span>e ad\u0131nda \u00f6zel bir k\u00f6fte yemekleri de vard\u0131r. Ankara ve \u0130stanbul\u2019dan direkt bir \u015fekilde hava yoluyla I\u011fd\u0131r\u2019\u0131 ziyaret edebilirsiniz. I\u011fd\u0131r Havaliman\u0131 13 Temmuz 2012\u2019den beri hizmet vermektedir.. I\u011fd\u0131r, A\u011fr\u0131 Da\u011f\u0131n\u0131 g\u00f6rebilece\u011finiz ve bir\u00e7ok tarihi alan\u0131 ziyaret edebilece\u011finiz bir ildir.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Tuz Ma\u011faras\u0131<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

Bu ma\u011fara Tuzluca il\u00e7esinde bulunmaktad\u0131r. Alan\u0131 55 d\u00f6n\u00fcmden olu\u015fmaktad\u0131r. T\u00fcrkiye\u2019nin 100 y\u0131ll\u0131k tuz ihtiyac\u0131n\u0131 kar\u015f\u0131layacak bir kapasiteye sahip oldu\u011fu s\u00f6ylenmektedir. Her g\u00fcn 60 ton tuz \u00e7\u0131kar\u0131lmaktad\u0131r. Bu ma\u011fara ayn\u0131 zamanda solunum yolu rahats\u0131zl\u0131\u011f\u0131 \u00e7ekenler i\u00e7in tuz terapisiyle de \u00fcnl\u00fcd\u00fcr.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Leylek Heykeli<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

Bu heykel I\u011fd\u0131r ilinin giri\u015finde bulunmaktad\u0131r. Bunun \u00f6zelli\u011fi I\u011fd\u0131r ilinin leylekler \u015fehri olarak bilinmesindendir. Leylerkler, 4 mevsim boyunca I\u011fd\u0131r\u2019da ya\u015fayabilmektedirle<\/span><\/span>r.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

S\u00fcrmeli Kalesi<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

I\u011fd\u0131r\u2019\u0131n merkezine 25 km uzakl\u0131kta olan S\u00fcrmeli k\u00f6y\u00fcnde bulunur. <\/span><\/span>Eski Ermeni \u015fehirlerinden biridir buras\u0131. Buray\u0131 kimin yapt\u0131\u011f\u0131 veya ne zaman yapt\u0131\u011f\u0131 hakk\u0131nda kesin bir bilgi bulunmamaktad\u0131r. Fakat bu kalenin ismi Dedekorkut hikayelerinde s\u00fcrekli ge\u00e7mektedir.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Ko\u00e7 Ba\u015f\u0131 Mezar Ta\u015flar\u0131<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

Bu mezar ta\u015flar\u0131 I\u011fd\u0131r ilinin her yerinde bulunmaktad\u0131r fakat \u00e7o\u011funlu\u011fu Karakoyunlu il\u00e7esinde bulunmaktad\u0131r. Bu mezarlar Kara Koyunlu d\u00f6neminden kalm\u0131\u015f eserlerdir.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
