The project of Anıtkabir would be determined with a contest. The contest was succeeded by Emin Onat and Orhan Arda and their projects formed what Anıtkabir is today. Anıtkabir was built on an area which is 15.000 square meters and the hill’s name started to be mentioned as Anıttepe.

One of the reasons why it was decided that the place called Rasattepe at that time was suitable for Anıtkabir was as follows; It is known that during a trip to Ankara many years ago, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk evaluated this hill as “What a beautiful monument place …”. The tombs and archaeological remains belonging to the Phrygian civilization, located on the same hill and unearthed during the excavation of Anıtkabir, are currently exhibited in the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations.

Architecture of Anıtkabir

In its construction, the light yellow and gray travertines of Çankırı were used. There is a symbolic sarcophagus consisting of a single piece of marble on a stone embankment in front of the wall facing the Ankara Castle, opposite the entrance door of the hall. Atatürk’s body is in the earth grave right under the sarcophagus.
