Regarding the 2019 reports, it has a population of 838.778 people. It\u2019s located in the Dicle Region of Southeast Anatolia Region. It has a border with Syria. The survey of Mardin is 8.858-kilometre square and its altitude is 1.083 meters. The governor of Mardin is Mustafa Yaman. Its licence plaque code is 47. According to the Turkish Statistics Institution (TUIK) reports published on 4 February 2020, Mardin has 10 provinces and municipalities and 696 neighbourhoods. Artuklu, Darge\u00e7it, Derik, K\u0131z\u0131ltepe, Maz\u0131da\u011f\u0131, Midyat, Nusaybin, \u00d6merli, Savur and Ye\u015filli are the provinces of Mardin. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There are historical places in Mardin which have been accepted as a cultural heritage by international organizations. It\u2019s a city with different ethnicities and religious beliefs. In the city, it\u2019s possible to see the mosques, synagogs and church together. Mardin is located in the route of Silk Road and thus there are caravansaries and inns in Mardin. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>A Short History Of Mardin<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Mardin is named as M\u00e2rid\u00een in Arabic, Marde in Assyrian and M\u00eard\u00een in Kurdish. There are different ideas about where this name comes from. Some people think that this name comes from Mardes who were a brave nation and came to Mardin from Arde\u015fir in 3.th century. Some people think that it comes from Merdin which means \u2018\u2019castles.\u2019\u2019 The name we use today comes from its Arabic name \u2018\u2019 M\u00e2rid\u00een.\u2019\u2019 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">Mardin is a city of a long history. The digs made in Artuklu University region have shown that its history dates back to Palaeolithic times. Mardin\u2019s name is first to be said by Roman historian Ammianus Marcellinus in 4.th century. In 1085, Mardin became a Seljuk city until it was conquered by Artuquids in 1103. In the end, in 1517, it became an Ottoman city. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Where To Visit in Mardin<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">Mardin is home to many civilizations and one of the most beautiful cities in Turkey. It\u2019s a must-see in Turkey with its mosques, churches, abbeys and its own architecture style. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Mardin Castle<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">Also known as the \u2018\u2019Eagle Nest\u2019\u2019, Mardin castle has a history of 1600 years and it has seen many civilizations during the history. It\u2019s not exactly known when it was built but it\u2019s believed that it was built in 10. century. It has a beautiful view of Mesopotamia Lowland.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Deyrulzafaran Convent<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s located 5 kilometres away from Mardin. It\u2019s an Assyrian convent and is still used by Assyrians people as an active place to pray. It\u2019s important to Mardin as it\u2019s the oldest construction to present the Assyrian community in the city. The tombs of 52 Assyrian patriarchs are there. It was built as a sun temple by Assyrians. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Zinciriye Medresa <\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s located in the centre of Mardin and was constructed by the last Artuquid sultan in Mardin,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Melik Necmettin \u0130sa,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>in 1385. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Mor Benham ( K\u0131rklar) Church<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">It was constructed in the name of Mor Benham and his sister Saro. It serves as an Orthodox Church today and it\u2019s been a place of Assyrian belief since 1293. A school was founded in the church in 1799 and it kept on till 1928. It\u2019s one of the most beautiful samples of early Christian works. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Kas\u0131miye Medresa<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s one of the biggest constructions in Mardin and is located in the centre of the city. Its construction started in 12. century and finished in 15. century. It was both a religious centre and also a medical school. It has a history of more than 800 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Mardin Ulu Mosque<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">As a symbol of Mardin, it\u2019s also known as Cami-i Kebir. Its history dates back to the Artuquid times. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Mardin Dara Antique City<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s located in O\u011fuz village which is 30 kilometres away from Mardin. This antique city is accepted to be one of the most important settlements of Mesopotamia. It\u2019s also known as the Ephesus of Mesopotamia and was used as a military place by Emperor Anastasius in 505 to protect to eastern borders. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Mardin Museum<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">Mardin Museum was built as an Assyrian Catholic Patriarchate in 1895 by the Antioch Patriarch of the time, \u0130gnatios Behnam Banni. It served as a religious temple, a military place and also a medical centre for a long time and then after some renovations made by the Assyrian Catholic Patriarchate, it became a museum in 1995.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Mor Gabriel ( Deyrulumur) Convent<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s located in G\u00fcng\u00f6ren village 23 kilometres away from Midyat. It\u2019s one of the most important places for the Assyrians in Mardin. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Surur Inn<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s located in the centre of Mardin and it\u2019s thought that it was constructed by the Ottomans in 17th or 18th century. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>The Virgin Mary Church and Patriarchate<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s one of the most important religious places for the Assyrian Catholics in Mardin. It\u2019s one of the best examples of two religions and cultures living together and it\u2019s in the temporary list of UNESCO world heritage. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>How to Go to Mardin<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s possible to go to Mardin by bus from different cities in Turkey. It\u2019s 1448 kilometres from \u0130stanbul and takes around 21 hours by car to go to Mardin. There\u2019s no railway connection to Mardin and the easiest way to go there is using the airport. Mardin Airport is 20 kilometres away from Mardin and has been serving people since 1999. Baz\u0131lar\u0131 da Mardin\u2019in, \u2018\u2019kaleler\u2019\u2019 anlam\u0131na gelen Merdin\u2019den geldi\u011fini s\u00f6yler. Bug\u00fcn kulland\u0131\u011f\u0131m\u0131z isim ise \u015fehrin Arap\u00e7a ismi \u2018\u2019M\u00e2rid\u00een\u2019\u2019 den gelmektedir. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Mardin k\u00f6kl\u00fc bir tarihe sahiptir. Kalenin ne zaman in\u015fa edildi\u011fi tam olarak bilinmemektedir ama 10. Y\u00fczy\u0131lda in\u015fa edildi\u011fi d\u00fc\u015f\u00fcn\u00fclmektedir. Deyrulzafaran Manast\u0131r\u0131 bir S\u00fcryani manast\u0131r\u0131d\u0131r ve g\u00fcn\u00fcm\u00fczde S\u00fcryaniler bu manast\u0131rda ibadet etmeye devam etmektedir. Bu manast\u0131r, \u015fehirdeki S\u00fcryani toplulu\u011funu temsil eden en eski yap\u0131 oldu\u011fu i\u00e7in Mardin i\u00e7i olduk\u00e7a \u00f6nemlidir. Manast\u0131rda 52 S\u00fcryani patri\u011finin mezarlar\u0131 bulunur. Yap\u0131m\u0131na 12. Y\u00fczy\u0131lda ba\u015flanm\u0131\u015f ve yap\u0131m\u0131 15. Y\u00fczy\u0131lda tamamlanm\u0131\u015ft\u0131r. Hem dini bir merkez, hem de t\u0131p okulu olarak kullan\u0131lan bu medresenin 800 y\u0131ldan \u00f6tesine dayanan bir tarihi vard\u0131r. <b> <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Mardin Ulu Cami<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">Mardin\u2019in bir sembol\u00fc olan Ulu Cami, Cami-i Kebir olarak da bilinir. Caminin tarihi Artuklu zamanlar\u0131na dayanmaktad\u0131r. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Mardin Dara Antik Kenti<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">Dara Antik Kenti, Mardin\u2019e 30 kilometre uzakl\u0131kta bulunan O\u011fuz K\u00f6y\u00fc\u2019nde bulunur. Bu antik kent, Mezopotomya\u2019daki en \u00f6nemli yerle\u015fim yerlerinden biri olarak kabul edilir. Dara Antik Kenti, Mezopotamya\u2019n\u0131n Efes\u2019i olarak da bilinir. 505 y\u0131l\u0131nda, \u0130mparator Anastasius taraf\u0131ndan do\u011fu s\u0131n\u0131rlar\u0131n\u0131 korumak ad\u0131na askeri bir \u00fcs olarak in\u015fa edilmi\u015ftir. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Mardin M\u00fczesi<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">Mardin M\u00fczesi 1895 y\u0131l\u0131nda, d\u00f6nemin Antakya Patri\u011fi \u0130gnatios Benham Banni taraf\u0131ndan bir S\u00fcryani Katolik Patrikhanesi olarak in\u015fa edilmi\u015ftir.
