It’s one of the most important settlements in the Upper Mesopotamia in history. It was founded with the orders of Emperor Anastasius (491-518) in 505 to protect the eastern border of the East-Roman Empire from the Sasanians.

The Ephesus of Mesopotamia

Dara ancient city is generally known as the Ephesus of Mesopotamia. It’s located in the Silk Way, so in the past, it’s known that it was an important trade center. It reflects very well the mosaic culture and history of Mardin and it’s definitely a special place to see.

What the Digs Bring

The digs having been made by the archaeologists keep surprising us. We know that the ruins of the world’s first underwater barrage were found during a dig in the area of Dara Ancient city. So this mystic Mesopotamia city is a huge mystery to explore.

An Uncompleted Discovery

Today, only the %30 of the Dare Ancient City has been discovered. Within this discovered area, it’s possible to see the castles, bridges, raceways, a church, water cisterns, a palace, a bazaar, a dungeon, an armory, rock graves and ruins of the civilian settlements. There are also cave houses belonging to the Late Roman Era. Yet it’s an uncompleted journey for the archaeologist as the %70 of the city is still underground.

A Brief History of Dara

The digs in Dara has been going on since 1986. Since 2009, in the Necropolis area, the studies have been made by the Mardin Directorate of Museums. After a dig for 2 years, researchers found the Necropolis area and they described the typologies of the graves.

Unique in the World

Some of these grave typologies are now open to visitors. These types of ‘’ Gallery Graves’’ are unique in the world. These graves were made in the memorial of the Roman soldiers died during the war in 573 by the other Roman soldiers coming back from their exile in 591. This mass area is a place where the bones in the war area were collected and put together. The researchers believe that there are bones of around 3.000 people in the graves of the Ancient City of Dara.

How to Go to Dara Ancient City?

Dara Ancient City is located in Oğuz Village which is 30 kilometers away from Mardin city center. To be able to go there, you can first come to Mardin by bus or by an airplane. There are regular bus and flight fares from big cities of Turkey, like İstanbul, İzmir, and Ankara to Mardin. Then you can hire a car to go to the Ancient City of Dara. It’s around 8 kilometers north of the Mardin-Nusaybin main road where the Mesopotamia Lowland and The Tur-Abdin mountains get together. You can arrive in the city when you drive 10 kilometers inside of the Oğuz village. Now that you are decided to go to the Ancient City of Dara, you should definitely spend a couple days in beautiful Mardin.

DARA ANTİK KENTİ TANITIMI

Dara Antik Kenti, Mardin’in 30 kilometre doğusunda, Oğuz Köyü’nde bulunur.
