It’s a palace that was constructed in Qalat Al-Hambra type of Arabic architecture. It was actually aimed to be a small fortress in 889 AD on the remains of old Roman fortifications. But then it was renovated in the 13th century by Nasrid Amir Mohammed Ben Al-Ahmar who was the Emirate of Granada. Later on, in 1333, it was converted into a royal palace. In 1492, the palace became the royal court of Ferdinand and Isabella. Alhambra is now one of the most well-known touristic places in Spain and it’s a good sample of Islamic architecture. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

About Alhambra

It’s not only important for Andalusia architecture, but also for Islam art. Its name which means red comes from the reddish colour of clay mortar which was used during the construction of the palace. Alhambra has been damaged a lot of times during the history and some parts of the palace have been destroyed yet it’s such an important place and a source of honour for Islam world. It’s one of the old Islam palaces which still stands up. It both symbolizes the power of a small country but also enlightens us about the disappeared palaces of Islam countries.

What Alhambra Means?

It’s an Arabic word which means the red one. In Arabic, ‘’Al’’ means ‘’the’’ but it’s generally not used either in English or in Spanish because in these languages the name is normally given the definite article.

Its Architecture

It has a tangled structure and consists of different rooms connected to each other. There are also gardens and fountains inside the palace. All these structures are located in amazing order. It’s possible to see a sentence which is engraved nearly in all rooms of Alhambra; it means ‘’ There’s no other victorious but God.’’ In Arabic. Alhambra, thus, is a palace which shows the world that God is the biggest. It’s impossible to see another palace in the world whose doors, walls and rooms are engraved in God’s name.

An Outstanding Structure

Alhambra has been harmed and damaged many times during history. But it’s possible to say that it’s resisted against all these difficulties. The Spanish authorities have been really careful about the renovation of the palace and they have taken into consideration that they are following the original during the restoration.

How to Go to Alhambra?

There’s no direct flight to Granada from Turkey but you can go to Barcelona or Madrid first and then arrive at Granada. Now that you are in the city centre, you can walk to the palace or take a bus. Don’t forget that you need a Schengen visa to be able to go to Spain.

El HAMRA SARAYI TANITIMI

El Hamra sarayı, İspanyolca’da La El Hambra, Endülüs bölgesinde, Granada şehrinde bulunur.
