Its both political and cultural history is notably rich. It was subject to different kinds of myths and caused different wars. It\u2019s the fourth crowded city in the EU cities. The currency is Euro, the official language is Italian and the center of Catholicism. The foundation of the city dates back to the 8th century. Roman culture has contributed much to the history of humankind. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rome was always aggressive and expansionist. First, the Roman Republic conquered the center of Italy. Then Gauls captured the Romans and sacked the city. Anyway, Rome recovered and invaded Southern Italy. Until 272, almost all Southern Italy was on their rule. For many years, the Roman system of slavery became widespread in Rome, which prospered in various states. Slaves were mostly foreigners who were captured in wars. Even though the slaves rebelled from time to time, Rome successfully quelled these rebellions. Spartacus was the most famous and relatively successful rebellion among them. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When thinking of Rome, mostly Julius Caesar was recalled. Caesar which served in the army at first, conquered Gaul and had a reputation among his men in the city. In 49 BC the Senate wanted Caesar to leave the army and return to Rome. Caesar refused and marched to Rome with his legions. Until his assassination in 44 BC , he was the dictator of Rome.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the civil war of the Roman Republic, Octavian(some resources say that he was the nephew or illegitimate son of the Caesar) became the first Roman emperor. He ensured the system in the management of the republic and ruled the people peacefully. Even after he passed away, the system he built continued. With Hadrian, the Roman Empire reached its peak. In 212 Caracalla the Emperor offered everyone Roman citizenship and after that empire started to fall. In 306 Constantine declared as an emperor and bring the toleration for Christianity. In 337, he was baptized on his deathbed just before he died.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diocletianus divided the country into two: East and West. There was no cooperation between the two halves. Germanic powers were getting stronger in the borders while the economic collapse was spreading in the West Roman Empire. In 476 Odoacer declared himself as the king of Italy and the West Roman Empire fell. While the East Roman Empire was getting weaker day by day, The Popes got stronger. Pope and Franks invaded Italy in the 8th century. In the year 754, with the effect of the power of the Pope, the city started to be known as the Pope States. In 1849, the Roman people rebelled and Pope fleed to France. Therefore, Italy reunited in 1961. Most of the Pope States accepted the new kingdom, but France protected Rome from Italians. France took the army from Rome to fight with Prussians in 1870. Italians took this as an advantage and invaded Rome and declared as the capital. After two world wars, Rome still keeps the importance and one of the centers of tourism.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Where to go in Rome<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Colosseum<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colosseum, also known as the Flavian amphitheater, is the most important and iconic building of Roman history. Emperor Vespasian from the Flavian dynasty built it as a gift to the Roman people. Thousands of animals and hundreds of people were sacrificed in inaugural games which were held nonstop during 100 days. The amphitheater with 50,000 watcher capacity is the biggest one. The Arena was the place where the gladiator fights, animal hunts or executions were held.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are gladiator figures in the structure surrounded by numerous arches. There are lots of rooms and stores in the structure and gladiators and animals were waiting here before the show. Gladiators and animals get on the stage through the gate at the entrance to the arena. The seats of the watchers were depended on their social status. During 450 years, Colosseum which was a scene of bloody deaths and wild fights was the most important entertainment center of people. This has ended after the gladiator fights are forbidden in 404 AD, and animal hunt in 523.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Trevi Fountain<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trevi Fountain, Also known as Love Fountain by the Turks, built-in 1735 by Nicoli Salvi. The fountain became a symbol is the largest and famous baroque fountain of Rome. According to beliefs, when you turn your back to the fountain and throw a coin with your right hand through your left shoulder, your dream comes true.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Sistine Chapel<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sistine Chapel which is located in the Vatican is the chapel in Apostolic Palace that Pope resides. The name of the chapel comes from Pope Sixtus IV. The chapel hosts the most important artworks in the world. Biblical scenes are depicted on the walls of the chapel.
