It was early spring and the settler family had a hard time all winter. They had brought food with them. But it was mostly gone. They had hunted, but they were not good hunters. They knew how to farm. They did not know how to follow animal tracks. So they never got any rabbits when they hunted. Still, they had set traps and caught some rabbits. They had some potatoes they had gotten at the trading post. But they were tired of potatoes. It was March and the weather was cool. The snow had melted, so they left to look for food. They looked for animal tracks and saw rabbit tracks in the mud. It was slippery, but they rushed after them. But they did not find any rabbits. They just got muddy. Then they saw a Native American family. They had bows and arrows. They had big sticks. The family was worried.

There were green plants. There might be something to eat. “It’s food!” the mother shouted. They rushed to where it was. It was onions and they were growing wild. The family picked the onions and brushed off the dirt. They ate them. It was great to have fresh food. “Let’s go home and look for my seeds,” the mother said. “It is going to be time to plant soon. We will have food. It is going to be a good spring. We should give some of our seeds to our new friends.”

My daughter brought a note home. I looked at the note and smiled. “So we will have a recycling center,” I said. She started to explain why it is important to recycle. “I know,” I said, but I don’t have time. She thought of a way to recycle. She set up a bag in the kitchen. She said it would be for plastic. We would put plastic in there. Then once a month we would take the plastic to the Recycle Center. She said that plastic takes us lots of energy to make. And she said that it is hard for the environment when people throw it out. It seemed like a good idea. But then the bag got full. In one week we had filled it with empty plastic bottles. My daughter said we should look at what we use. We are using too much plastic. So we looked for ways to use less plastic.

I told my neighbor about this. She liked the idea. She started keeping her plastic in a bag. We all went together to the Recycle Center on the first Saturday. We brought our plastic. When we got there, we saw many bags. People had brought lots of trash. They brought paper and metal, too. “Now that we have this center, it is easier to recycle,” said my neighbor. When we were walking back from the Recycle Center, I saw a change. The street was cleaner. Most days I see trash in the street. But there was no litter today. My daughter said that another class had “adopted” the street. They were picking up litter there and taking it to the Recycle Center. I said this is really big. It is about more than plastic. It is about lots of changes.

Mother has some of the potatoes you gave us and she says she can use them to grow more potatoes. I will be learning about growing food.

There were many people driving down our street. It was the way to go to work for many people. They drove too fast, and my mother was worried because she thought they might hurt someone. She called the alderman’s office. She had called them before when there was a problem. The alderman came to look at our street, and he agreed it was a problem. Then, he went back to his office. The following day someone came to our street with a camera. I saw them there all day, taking pictures of the street.

This time I called the alderman’s office myself.

At the end of the day, we had a way to slow the cars down. We did speed bumps. Someone invented speed bumps. When you drive on a street and get to a speed bump you have to slow down. If you don’t slow down, your car has a problem. It starts to rock up and down. So you need to be very careful.

Flying (Uçan)
I have always wanted to fly. When I was just five years old, I would watch planes on television. I also had a toy plane that I flew. It was just a glider and did not really fly far, but I still loved it. When I was 12, I went to the airport for the first time. We were going to meet my brother. He was coming home from the war and I was very glad to see him. But I was so excited to see the planes that I did not want to leave the airport.

I worked hard at school and I got good grades. I was on the track team, too. I kept myself very busy. I wanted to get to go to the Air Force Academy so that I could fly.

Now I am 21 and this is my last day at the Academy. I have learned how to fly and I have learned a lot more, too. I still love airplanes and I am going to be a pilot now. My dream has finally come true.
